Postpartum Chills
Giving birth is one of the most transformative experiences. However, it can lead to various postpartum symptoms, including chills.
What are postpartum chills?
Postpartum chills are a common and temporary side effect of giving birth. It typically occurs in the hours following delivery and is characterized by uncontrollable shivering or trembling.
Why do they happen?
The rapid drop in hormones after delivery is the leading cause. During pregnancy, estrogen and progesterone help regulate body temperature. After delivery, these levels drop rapidly, triggering shivering. Epidural anesthesia may also increase likelihood.
How can you manage it?
- Dress in warm clothing and use blankets
- Drink plenty of fluids
- Rest as much as possible
- Consult your healthcare provider if symptoms are severe
